Abby: In Loving Memory
On Wednesday, my mom said goodbye to her wonderful German Shepherd Abby. She almost made it to 13 years, such a blessing for a breed that size. But of course the time feels far too short.

I don't have as many photos as I'd like, particularly of the years before I got my first digital camera. Don't have any of her in her obedience training or agility either, in part because I had to sneak in to watch so she didn't know I was in there! But I was happy, combing through years of photos, that I made it a point to take some whenever I visited my parents in California, and that I have two movies as well. So wish I'd had my current camera when she was a puppy!

There is no denying that she had a wonderful life and a lot of love, and came a long way from the puppy who threw up on car rides and was scared of the water (and all other dogs). In her later years she scared a few years of life out of a few unfortunate USPS/UPS workers, that's for certain! She liked cats but didn't seem to learn that skunks were a bit different.

I'll never forget the time she got loose while I was housesitting for my parents, went off for a refreshing swim in a nearby pond, and then put herself into her kennel afterward!

August 2010, swimming is even more fun in hot California!

December 2013, I fully expected I would not get to see her again...

But I was wrong! June 2014 was our last meeting, this side of the veil.

I am sorry. I lost my GSD girl 5 years ago next month. She was nearly 14. It's certainly never easy!

Nearly 14, that's fantastic! Abby had some sort of degenerative nerve thing I can't remember the name of, so we're very glad she lived a lot longer than the vet predicted.

But 12 more years would have been wonderful.

Degenerative Myleopathy? That's a pretty common problem in a lot of GSDs, and they end up just not being able to walk.

Pretty sure that's it because of how she was stumbling and dragging her hind feet at times. Yes, I realize it doesn't kill them directly, but my parents rent and my mom didn't have the resources to get a dog her size over to the park, with or without a 'wheelchair.' It was bad enough the couple times she collapsed in the park. But the diagnosis was years ago, so we all expected her to deteriorate a LOT faster.
